The UAE ranked first in the Arab world in the 2023 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), which assesses 4th and 8th-grade students in science and mathematics. The study, conducted every four years, included participants from over 64 countries.

The forum announcing the TIMSS 2023 results for global and GCC countries was hosted for the first time by the UAE Ministry of Education at the Museum of the Future in Dubai. The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement revealed the results via a live broadcast to all participating countries. The event was attended by UAE education leaders, including representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), and the Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA). Delegations from Boston University, the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States, GCC countries, as well as public and private school leaders and domain managers also participated.

Her Excellency Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of Education, congratulated UAE students on their exceptional TIMSS results. She highlighted the Ministry's efforts to enhance the country's performance in global assessments and emphasized the importance of such studies as key tools for monitoring educational progress and shaping strategic development directions.

Her Excellency Al Amiri noted that the results showed significant progress, surpassing the global average in both public and private schools, with 750 schools across the UAE participating. She highlighted that the UAE is one of only three countries to achieve notable progress in science, reflecting improved education quality and student achievement, aligned with the Ministry's vision for global educational leadership.

Her Excellency stated that the Ministry of Education collaborated with specialists to enhance students' science and mathematics skills and boost their global competitiveness, aligning with the UAE's educational goals. She reiterated that improving education sector performance in global indicators remains a key priority in the Ministry's strategy.

UAE students made significant progress in the TIMSS 2023 study compared to 2019. Grade-4 mathematics scores improved by 17 points and science by 22 points, while Grade-8 students saw a 15-point increase in mathematics and a 14-point rise in science.

The two-day forum, held on December 4-5, 2024, reviewed the GCC countries' results and initiatives to improve student performance in mathematics and science. It also announced global results and featured seminars and discussions on the future of mathematics and science education, the effectiveness of curricula, teaching methods and recommendations for enhancing student achievement.
